The Rome of theater and spectacle, backdrop to film and fashion, owes its glamor to the Baroque era. These two talks will reveal the minds and hands behind the magic, from the infrastructure of Pope Sixtus V to the urban "special effects" of Pope Alexander VII. Bernini and Algardi, Pietro da Cortona and Rubens, were but a few of the creative geniuses who transformed Rome in the 17th century. Two lectures will look at fountains, frescoes and facades, reveling in the exuberant joy that has captivated both pilgrims and tourists for centuries.
Rise of the Baroque: Pilgrimage and Infrastructure

This lecture will look at the ground work of the Baroque era. Starting with the Piazza del Popolo, we'll trace the pilgrims paths, the main sites and the constructions built to welcome them, particularly for Jubilee Years. Then we'll look at the art designed to instruct, persuade and amaze the many visitors who came to Rome.

This lecture will explore the aspects of the Baroque by themes, science, globalization, theater and death. We'll explore the amazing funeral monuments of St Peter's, the dazzling ceiling frescoes of the Gesu and Barberini and the elaborately composed altarpieces such as St Teresa in Ecstasy and much, much more!
Elizabeth Lev studied art history at the University of Chicago and the University of Bologna and has taught art history at Duquesne University’s Rome campus since 2002. She also teaches at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas and Christendom College. She has written many books and articles, including A Body for Glory: Theology of the Body in the Papal Collections with Fr Jose Granados. She has lectured on the Vatican Museums worldwide, including a TED talk which has garnered over a million views. She has just returned from a four-month fellowship at University of Notre Dame where she has been working on another book, The Pope’s Art, about the history of the Vatican collections.
