Julius II to Pius V: From Rome’s Rebirth to Ruin.

How the collection was formed – from the ambitious vision of a “warrior pope” who amassed its most famous works to the fascinating discoveries and donations that made the nucleus of the museum. Meet the earliest visitors and discover the symbolic meaning of the museum space, whose fame was known throughout Christendom until its disgrace and dismantling after the Protestant Reformation.
Pius VI to the Fall of the Papal States: The Birth of the First Modern Museum

The changing intellectual and cultural climate of the Enlightenment provoked the renewal of the papal collections. Architects and curators worked alongside the popes to expand the exhibition space to accommodate the growing collection. Financing the museum, conserving the art and administrating the first custodial staff will be discussed as well as extraordinary installation project. The tragic loss of the art to the French and its startling recovery under Pius VII bring the story of the Vatican Museums into the nineteenth century.
Pius XI to Present Challenges

The remarkable pontificate of Pius XI Ratti saw the Vatican Museums become a public relations instrument on a global scale. From the new entrance and galleries to the first woman to be hired by the Vatican to the efforts to protect the artistic patrimony as the second World War loomed large, the Vatican Museums became the calling card of the Church in the secular age. This lecture will close with a look at the actual challenges facing the museums today and some thoughts on how to deliver our best work in very difficult circumstances.
Elizabeth Lev studied art history at the University of Chicago and the University of Bologna and has taught art history at Duquesne University’s Rome campus since 2002. She also teaches at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas and Christendom College. She has written many books and articles, including A Body for Glory: Theology of the Body in the Papal Collections with Fr Jose Granados. She has lectured on the Vatican Museums worldwide, including a TED talk which has garnered over a million views. She has just returned from a four-month fellowship at University of Notre Dame where she has been working on another book, The Pope’s Art, about the history of the Vatican collections.
