As tourists and pilgrims alike gasp at the threshold of St Peter’s Basilica, few realize that all the magnificence before them sprang from the tomb of Galilean fisherman killed for a crime he didn’t commit. Two thousand years of conflict, triumph, hubris, and humility blend together in the massive structure of the basilica to create the “Game Face” of the Catholic Church.
These two lectures will offer a virtual tour of the basilica, looking at the art, architecture, personalities, and events that have shaped the most famous church in the world.

The lecture will start with the Constantinian origins of the basilica now visible in the crypt and the grottoes and will end with Bramante’s great new project for Pope Julius II in 1506 and Michelangelo’s contribution to the basilica, from his Pietà to the dome.

The lecture will cover the subsequent eras of the basilica, the interventions of Bernini, as well as the various transformations made in preparation for the Holy Years.
Elizabeth Lev studied art history at the University of Chicago and the University of Bologna and has taught art history at Duquesne University’s Rome campus since 2002. She also teaches at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas and Christendom College. She has written many books and articles, including A Body for Glory: Theology of the Body in the Papal Collections with Fr Jose Granados. She has lectured on the Vatican Museums worldwide, including a TED talk which has garnered over a million views. She has just returned from a four-month fellowship at University of Notre Dame where she has been working on another book, The Pope’s Art, about the history of the Vatican collections.
